BOOK SUMMARY:

One mission. One curse. No escape.

Zaira doesn’t want a hero. She needs a weapon.

To save her sister from a soul-devouring curse, she has to cross The Shallows—a nightmare landscape of ruined magic, shifting paths, and vicious creatures that eat people alive.

Her guide? Thane Valkor: sorcerer, assassin, walking red flag. His name clears rooms. His magic kills quietly. And whatever he’s really after, it’s not salvation.

He promises to help. He might even mean it.

But Zaira knows better than to trust a liar with a blade and ice in his veins.

She just doesn’t have a choice.

I LIKED IT!

Thanks to a random story I saw I went and downloaded this book! It was a fun romantasy and while I did think it’s a standalone, I’ll read the sequel!

I liked the dynamic between the romantic leads. Zaira is a strong empath and truly leads with kindness and in a brutal world and magic system I thought it was a great opposition to things happening around (and to) her. While it totally frustrated me at times, I was also interested to see how her character arc would be shaped over the novel.

The romance is very much grump x sunshine. Thane is a force and I liked getting more of his background too. I do think the spice started a little early and I’m still not 100% sold on the relationship. I’m hopeful to see how book two increases the connection.

I liked the world. I liked the magic system and it was all around a good read. I’m not a huge fan of travel adventure style plots so that became repetitive for me, otherwise though, I think you should pick this up!

Book Review: Rites of the Starling (Shield of Sparrows #2) by Devney Perry

Rating: ★★★★
Audience: Fantasy Romance
Length: 500 pages
Author: Devney Perry
Publisher: Red Tower Books
Release Date: April 7th, 2026
Image & Other Reviews on: Goodreads

BOOK SUMMARY:

RITES OF THE STARLING is the epic, heart-pounding sequel to Devney Perry’s #1 New York Times-bestselling SHIELD OF SPARROWS. A princess journeys across a cursed realm to find the truth about her family, only to discover her quest intertwines with the fate of a lost warrior. Love, danger and magic collide in a captivating romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros.

Calandra’s five kingdoms are on the verge of destruction. The crux migration is coming. And in the wake of a devastating attack, I’ve been separated from the man who owns my heart.

I’m lost. Terrified. Homesick. Hunted by monsters, driven to exhaustion, and kidnapped by a powerful priest, the only thing keeping me going is the little girl counting on me to keep her safe. It’s my turn to become the Guardian.

Our lives change one fateful night. A night of death. A night of monsters. A night of truths. That night, I learn the real meaning of fear—and the depth of my own strength.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice. But what if I embrace my crown? What if the secrets I uncover save our realm?

What if my sacrifice means salvation for the man I love?

For too long, I’ve feared the monsters we make.

It’s time to discover the monster within.

I’LL TAKE IT.

I feel like big, anticipated sequels can go south quickly and I’m grateful that this was not the case for Rites.

But. I do have some issues.

I really can’t stand when the main couple is split for so long when they’ve already become an official couple. It just makes me cranky the longer the pages go on without Odessa and Ransom working together. I do love the interactions between them and loved when we finally got the chance to see them.

There was also a new POV. And I am still trying to figure out why it was added in the first place. YES, we got some back story but I do not think it needed to take up so much page time. It was as if the book needed more pages and this was the chosen way to fill them and it took me forever to feel emotionally invested leaving less room for the main story line to move forward.

I genuinely had an easy time reading this and was invested enough. I love all of these characters. The main leads and the side ones too. I think the world is great and the magic system continually intrigues me. While this book didn’t provide any answers I’m still looking forward to seeing how the [big issue] is solved.

BOOK SUMMARY:

A war-scarred mage. A sentient ship. A secret that could drown empires.

When Ensign Bluemage Honor Renn is rescued from the wreckage of her first naval post, she expects death or disgrace. Instead, she wakes aboard the Touchstone, a mythic vessel whispered of in dockside ballads and royal war rooms alike. With a crew of misfits. A mysterious, elven captain. And a mission tied to the Dreadwall, the crumbling barrier that has kept the Overland and Nethersea from open war for a hundred years.

But the tragedy that sank her last ship didn’t just take lives—it left something behind.

Now Renn carries a secret everyone wants. A magik that’s chimeric, arcane…and slowly killing her. But the captain’s mission may be her only chance to survive, even if he still doesn’t trust her.

Caught between privateers, princes, and spies, Renn knows each choice could sink her future—or set the sea on fire.

Ship of Spells is perfect for readers who crave the raw grit of Arya Stark, the world-building of Samantha Shannon, and the slow-burn tension of enemies who should never trust or want each other.

Thank you to Red Tower Books and Kaye Publicity for the gifted ARC.

PLEASE DON’T.

I honestly don’t even want to write this review but I’m going to mention some of the issues I had with this book and why I took one for the team and I’m going to need you to go read a different romantasy.

The biggest notable complaint was the unexplainable world building. So much so that I still can’t tell you what the FMC looks like. Was I ever told? I’M NOT SURE. There were also made up words and phrases/dialogue that I believe were elements to the world building but with the lack of explanation I was confused from the first chapter (and my husband even read a few chapters and was like, what is going on????).

This “enemies to lovers” might be one of the worst I’ve come across and not for one second did I think these two had chemistry.

I’m still at a loss for what was the true point of the plot. I don’t know what message it was trying to convey or where the FMC was supposed to go on her journey.

Book Review: Accomplice to the Villain (Assistant to the Villain #3) by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

Rating: ★★★★★
Audience: Fantasy Romance
Length: 336 pages
Author: Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Publisher: Red Tower Books
Release Date: August 5th, 2025
Image & Other Reviews on: Goodreads

BOOK SUMMARY:

Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

REWARD OFFERED: Apprentice to The Villain wanted for treason (light), magical property damage (alleged), and one incident involving a weaponized scone (accurate). Frequently seen with a grumpy frog (crowned, judgmental). Answers to “Evie” or “Stop that.”

Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.

Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire—or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.

Being evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again…neither was falling for The Villain.

A magical office comedy with grumpy bosses, snarky frogs, and definitely-not-feelings.

LOOOOVED.

GOSH, these books are just so fun??! I love them. I love how unique and different they feel and the vibes are immaculate every time. The slowest of slow burns continues to burn at the perfect level and I am continually feral for every tiny interaction between Evie and Tristan.

And I liked all of the other POV’s too. They were a great addition and added more layers to the story and plot and all of the other scenes that we wouldn’t have otherwise seen. The other romances between these characters were cute too!!

Hands down, these have some of the BEST BANTER I have ever read and I love listening to the audiobook (though I will not I wish it had multiple narrators!!).

The ending cliffhanger had the reveal I was hoping for and I am chomping at the bit to hear information about book four!!!!
