BOOK SUMMARY:

The fate of the world rests on a blade’s edge.

Fighting beside her band of unlikely companions, Corayne is learning to embrace her ancient lineage and wield her father’s powerful sword.

But while she successfully closed one of the Spindles, her journey is far from over.

Queen Erida’s army marches across Allward with her consort, Taristan, right beside them, opening more portals into nightmarish worlds, razing kingdoms to the ground.

Corayne has no choice but to assemble an army of her own if she’s to save the realm as she knows it. But perilous lands await her and the companions, and they face assassins, otherworldly beasts, and tempestuous seas all as they rally a divided Ward to fight behind them.

But Taristan has unleashed an evil far more wicked than his corpse armies. Something deadly waits in the shadows; something that might consume the world before there’s any hope for victory.

WHO KNEW.

I’m here with another five star read for this series and I’m as surprised as you are. I have been really loving the audiobooks and the whole way this world is set-up. It’s complicated and intricate and I love that we got to explore the world a lot more in the second book.

NOT TO MENTION. This series currently has me cheering on the villains and I don’t know what to do with that information. I’m kick your feet in the air giddy whenever Taristan is on page. LIKE HOW. It’s fine. I’m here for it. Though I’m also so very curious how that plot line will work out in the finale.

This is the kind of epic fantasy I really enjoy and I also appreciate that it is a true young adult book too. There’s twists and big action scenes. Quiet moments and political intrigue. It’s been great, can’t wait for more!

Overall audience notes:

  • YA Fantasy
  • Language: very little
  • Romance: closed door (between a married couple)
  • Violence: high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: blood/gore depiction, mass murder and war themes

BOOK SUMMARY:

Save the world or end it.

A strange darkness is growing in the Ward. Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea.

Fate knocks on her door, in the form of a mythical immortal and a lethal assassin, who tell Corayne that she is the last of an ancient lineage—with the power to save the world from destruction.

Because a man who would burn kingdoms to the ground is raising an army unlike any seen before, bent on uprooting the foundations of the world. With poison in his heart and a stolen sword in his hand, he’ll break the realm itself to claim it. And only Corayne can stop him.

Alongside an unlikely group of reluctant allies, Corayne finds herself on a desperate journey to complete an impossible task, with untold magic singing in her blood and the fate of the world on her shoulders.

ALRIGHT LET’S DO THIS.

This book has a 3.62 average on Goodreads and I’m convinced I read a different book. GRANTED. I am always here for multiple POV’s, complicated plots and villain story lines. Though I swear if this screws me over like Red Queen I will riot.

I thought this was interesting. It’s a complex world with spindle and magic and immortals and kings and queens and I loved how they all worked together. You have some of the usual tropes mixed in with things I didn’t know I needed: aka, the villain romance. YES PLEASE.

There’s so many characters and I liked the beginning of everyone’s story. I can’t wait to see how these further twist and turn over the series. The banter is great, the subtle possible romances have my attention and the found family is definitely building.

I didn’t feel the length of this (could be due to the audio) but I’m also cool with the big books. Can’t wait to see what book two holds!

Overall audience notes:

  • YA Fantasy
  • Language: a little strong
  • Romance: kisses
  • Violence: high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, battle/war themes

BOOK SUMMARY:

A dark fate descends. A shattered alliance must rise.

The Companions are torn apart and the realm hangs in the balance, at the edge of ruin. Taristan and Queen Erida rise triumphant from the battlefield, while Corayne barely escapes with her life; her Companions left behind to uncertain fates.

But not all hope was lost: Corayne managed to steal Taristan’s Spindleblade. Without it, Taristan can’t rip open any more Spindles. Without it, he can’t end the world.

Now, from every corner of the realm, the Companions race to reunite while they rally old allies and seek unexpected new ones, in one final push against darkness.

But Taristan and Erida are all but invincible. With their cruel god, What Waits, on their side, they will sacrifice anything and anyone to his hunger.

Everything has come to this. In the final clash between good and evil, a ragged alliance makes its bravest stand against a ruthless enemy . . . and the demon god who would consume the realm entire.

GREAT CONCLUSION.

This review won’t be terribly long because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone, but I am here to say this was much better than the Red Queen series (of which I DNF after the third book and raged when someone told me what happened in the fourth). THIS SERIES ENDS BETTER.

And for all my low romance lovers, this is a great series to pick up. There’s some, but it’s very much a sub plot and doesn’t overwhelm the big plot happenings. This had those high fantasy vibes while being a young adult aged (and appropriate) read.

I found the final moments to wrap up where things needed to be. I had some concerns about a certain pairing and thought that where the ended up made a lot of sense and felt satisfying.

Many will find these books slow, so I highly recommend the audio (I listened to all three of them) to make things move a little faster.

  • Violence: moderate-high
