WELL…

As a former basketball girlie I am always on the hunt for a good basketball romance (send help, where are they?) so I jumped at the chance to read this book aaaaand, it was fine. There’s plenty of basketball (but neither of them are players) and it feels immersive to that atmosphere at least.

Though I thought the portrayal of March Madness didn’t work. It felt very scripted for the book and honestly that took the fun out of it. I was not inspired by this “miracle” team and think that plot point could have functioned better.

There are some good and important themes and discussions that felt relevant and informative. I wish Annie hadn’t lied and kept secrets from Ben for as long as she did though.

The romance is there, but it didn’t feel all that romantic. I kept waiting to feel the swoon and it wasn’t really there. The rivals to lovers trope worked well and there were tender moments woven throughout.

I’M HERE FOR IT.

I gotta say, I like this sexier writing style of LB & KB. It is that delicious level of heat without being open door and I can’t tell y’all how deeply I will BEG to have more authors in this category. It once again goes to show, you do not have to have spice to have a heated romance and I will die on this hill.

ANYWAYS.

I really did love the New Girl loft dynamics here. The boys were such gems and I adored the way they played off of each other and took care of each other. I love strong male friendship groups and that Allegra found her own close girlfriends too.

It did take me just a touch to get into (and I don’t know if that’s because I was getting used to the new setting or that the flow of writing was off for a few chapters). BUT, I thought things only got better and better and I binge read the second half of this book. I could not put it down and LOOOOVED it all. I loved the character growth for both Ally and Noah. I loved seeing old characters. I loved the protectiveness and all of the hockey content. Just so many good things stood out to me.

I’m very excited to read more books from this series.

CARAVAL REPEAT?

This one was interesting for me. I’m a big fan of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval/Once Upon a Broken Heart series. LOVED both of them and I knew going into this to expect something different. And while yes, that was the case, it also felt like a repeat of Caraval? Just add in older characters and an urban fantasy setting instead. I haven’t decided how that makes me feel about my overall impression of the book.

The romance was 100% lacking on the swoon. Now that I understand this is a series I CAN see what the author is going after but I don’t think that will all click until book two [hopefully]. I didn’t know what direction I was supposed to lean in and that made me pause a few too many times throughout. I will say this was a kisses only adult romance and I appreciated that it wasn’t unnecessarily spice forward.

I’m definitely going to continue the series because I do have questions. I think the folklore aspects were interesting and the POV change made me think too. I have my eyes on a few characters and want to see how they fold into the larger plot. This was a decent beginning but lacking that punch of something to give it an edge.

I’M TRYING.

Chloe Gong has written one of my favorite dark YA series so of course I’m over here trying to love on her adult books but y’all. I am STRUGGLING. I listened to the audiobook this time which didn’t change my perception but did make going through it quicker more achievable because I once again found myself somewhat…bored.

It feels like the plot is trying to do so many things at once that I’m not quite sure what truly needs to be done. Or it’s this sense of lolly-gagging from the characters while waiting for big shifts in the story to occur. And whoever is calling this book a romance is lying to you. Yes, it does have some romantic aspects but I consider that 10% of the story at best.

So I don’t know. Actually I do know, I know I will find myself reading book three hoping something clicks finally for me.
