I’M GOING TO NEED YOU TO GO PICK UP THIS SERIES.

OH Y’ALL. I loved book one and this sequel held up. HELD UP. I can’t help but get hesitant when I see a book over 600 pages, but let me tell you, all worth it. I’m obsessed.

The romances are everythinggggg. And not always what you’re expecting or the typical route. Which is probably why they make me drool. I love when fantasy romances accomplish this kind of longing and betrayal and angsty tension that you can’t look away from. There’s multiple romantic plot lines (and even a new POV that might have one too???).

And while the romance sing the plot lines hold their own elite status. It’s a great combination of politicking, travel, battles with gods and more. Every chapter brings you something new. This may have taken me awhile to read but that was only because I was enjoying it so thoroughly I didn’t want it to end.

BETTER THAN THE FIRST.

This is definitely a hidden gem in the romantasy world. I love the way the love triangle has been working out and where things led to in this installment. I think that Elessia showed so more growth and I am continually enjoying seeing her journey. The action hits an uptick and the second half of this book really flew by.

I loved the addition of more characters and the complicated found family dynamics they created. The higher level of intensity is starting to set the scene for the next book. [So far] I have found the continuation just right, I’m still getting enough info about the world and magic while also loving on the romance. Elessia was a *touch* too oblivious for me in regard to the romance BUT Merrick? Hot dang I loved watching that man follow her around.

Very excited for the next book!!

ROUND AND ROUND.

This kind of had book two syndrome? But it was also pretty easy to gobble up? Not to mention that the audiobook is superb so that definitely helped too.

Most of this book felt like a circle. Bad guy does something, there would be some kind of battle/skirmish, a slightly cringy love scene, repeat. And that happened for at least the first 60%. After that point some of the reveals and things finally starting happening and the fallout was needed. I could see how the world had expanded and how this affected Stark and Meryn. I do appreciate that this kept the same tone from book one. It’s dark and you never know who is going to survive the next part of the quest and that also helped the pacing too.

So while not my favorite, I do think it was a solid sequel. I’m excited to see what happens next but I’m also okay not owning these books too.

BRUTAL CLIFFHANGER.

And I love a brutal cliffhanger. Leave me grasping for more and begging for the next book because that is absolutely the case here. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW.

This did start off a bit slow and I was worried for the progression of the story. But never fear, Elise Kova delivers again. There is something about morally gray characters that I just love. Clare and Kaelis flaunt this line beautifully. I loved the deceptions and twists. Spending my time trying to figure out what new secret was going to unveil and honestly WHO WAS GOING TO SURVIVE.

I became obsessed with Kaelis and his romantic notions. For all of his dark void-ness and deeds, he was SO DOWN BAD for Claire. I loved that EK gave us soft smiles and genuine laughter and the boyish looks. It added all sorts of layers to his character and I can’t wait to see how that works out in the conclusion.

There were a couple other things I loved that would be spoiler adjacent if you haven’t read the first book so I won’t say more on that other than the other relationships in Clare’s life were good to see too. How she slowly learned to let people in and find those she could be honest with.

Insane ending that I have all of the questions about and need answers desperately!!
