BOOK SUMMARY:

The Ones Above are starting to grow impatient and want to build an installation to breed and collect Aviar on one of First of the Sun’s islands. Vathi and Dusk are trying to figure out how to delay their progress and are also dealing with people from another world, likely Roshar. Dusk realizes that the people of First of the Sun are hopelessly outmatched and decides to go through Patji’s Eye, the perpendicularity on the island Patji, to try to enlist help.

OH HOW I LOVED THIS.

NOTE: I wanted to mention upfront that I don’t think this is the right book for someone wanting to try Sanderson for the first time. While it could totally be read as a standalone a lot of the joy I got from reading Emberdark was from the fact I knew all of the mentions of Sanderson’s other books and how they connect for a future Cosmere.

Now back to business. WHAT A GOOD BOOK. It absolutely has the Moana vibes everyone has talked about (even though it was written before Moana). I loved the seafaring adventure and seeing the Cosmere down the line and how all of the worlds have fused to new populations and situations. I loved all of these characters and the story and plot and ALL THE THINGS OKAY. I couldn’t put this book down and thought the audiobook was amazing too.

There’s just so many good tidbits and scenes I could talk about forever. And many important conversations and topics that I loved seeing included. This is easily one of my favorite secret projects (how many times have I said that now??).

Overall audience notes:

  • Fantasy
  • Language: low
  • Romance: none
  • Violence: moderate

Book Review: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter (The Cosmere) by Brandon Sanderson

Rating: ★★★★★
Audience: Fantasy Romance
Length: 474 pages
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Publisher: Dragonsteel
Release Date: July 1st, 2023

BOOK SUMMARY:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings us a gripping story set in the Cosmere universe told by Hoid, where two people from incredibly different worlds must compromise and work together to save their worlds from ruin.

Yumi comes from a land of gardens, meditation, and spirits, while Painter lives in a world of darkness, technology, and nightmares. When their lives suddenly become intertwined in strange ways, can they put aside their differences and work together to uncover the mysteries of their situation and save each other’s communities from certain disaster?

LOVELY.

This was really dang good. Am I surprised? Not at all. And shoutout to my favorite audiobook narrators that read all of Sanderson’s books. Y’all are amazing.

I love how this subtly (but firmly) took on AI and the beauty and imagination of genuine artists. I felt this was really a nod to how important and impactful art (in all forms) is to a society.

The romance is sweet and actually at the for front of this story. Now I wouldn’t say this is a ROMANCE, but there is heavy focus on the relationship between Painter and Yumi. I adored these characters and how they both learned about the other, were honest about their struggles and were genuinely trying to do what was best.

Hoid once again narrates and I thought his little snippets were funny and quirky. While not necessarily my favorite aspect, I get the idea behind using this framework for the books that don’t necessarily fit into one of Sanderson’s already built systems.

This can be read as a standalone without prior Sanderson books. The narration might throw you off and you could see some Easter eggs from other parts of the Cosmere, but nothing spoiler based.

Overall audience notes:

  • Fantasy / Romance
  • Language: a little
  • Romance: kisses
  • Violence: moderate
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: physical and magical altercations, nightmares, anxiety depiction, depression depiction,

BOOK SUMMARY:

#1 New York Times Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings us deeper into the Cosmere universe with a rollicking, riveting tale that will appeal to fans of The Princess Bride.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

FASCINATINGLY GOOD.

I mean, was I expecting anything less? NOPE.

I absolutely loved this. I felt like I was completely immersed in these characters, the story, plot, everything. Having Hoid as the narrator was the perfect dose of wit and spunk that carried everything else along. There was great social commentary that fit in well within the fantasy background and a lot of nods to self-worth and coming of age. I flat out laughed multiple times because the jokes just landed with all of the charm Hoid has.

The story was full of action and heart. I felt like it had a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean vibes with a Cosmere twist. I adored the diverse side characters and the found family that Tress and them became. It was whimsical yet intense and I was on the edge of my seat often.

I loooved the twists and the ending was fantastic. There’s so many little pieces in here that I could talk about (but won’t because spoilers) that really made this entire read. Sanderson crafts books like no others. You’ll love Tress’s character arc and the journey she goes on.
