I LIKED IT.

This is my first by the author, and the first Christian romance I’ve read in a very long time. Both turned out better than I expected and I’m grateful for that.

I liked the plot and setting. The historical aspects worked so well and I felt transported to the 1920’s. The mystery brought out enough intrigue to keep the page turning and I did not see some of the ending reveals coming!

Romance wise, it was rather swoony and sweet. I love protective heroes, it’s just my favorite, and there were plenty of opportunities for that here. A tiny bit of fake dating, taking care of you scenes and you can consider me charmed. There were a few things about purity that I didn’t love and I’m mostly chalking up to a time period situation. Otherwise the Christianity aspects worked well into the plot and I liked the themes of forgiveness and God accepting you where you are.

TOOK ME BY PLEASANT SURPRISE.

I saw this around recently and felt drawn in enough to give it a go. And Y’ALL. It surprised me in the best ways. I truly ended up loving this romance and story.

The circus setting was perfect. I liked how the good and bad was shown in the historical context of the time period. I thought things were handled with care and I loved learning more about how things were run with traveling circuses and all of the great people you can meet along the way.

Romance wise, I was swooned away by Charlie. It’s a fast paced romance (when they commented on the time that had passed I was shocked it had been so quick). Yet, the insta love nature was drawn out in the right ways that I did still feel the connection between Charlie and Ella. They were super sweet together and both had a lot of character growth.

There are clear Christianity aspects that I thought aligned well with the tone of the plot. Many aspects of forgiveness and realizing your true worth in the face of things out of your control. There’s quite a few hard topics that are addressed and I think both sides of this merged well.

HAUNTING.

I got so very wrapped up into this I could not put the last 30% down. I loved the way this built and built. I personally hadn’t realized it had a suspense element to it and it was GREAT. Consider me officially invested in all future Hannah Linder books.

I love multiple POV books and having four here worked into this plotline so well. Seeing everyone’s perspective on different matters made the book feel whole and that I could catch all of the angst and longing and desire to be wanted and cared for. Heath and Temperance’s romance was suuuper sweet. I wish there was a little more development there, but I did love them together and the journey they took as a couple.

And childhood friends to lovers is always a great trope. Nan and Gilbert had some great tension and I liked the romantic development here too. What I struggled with was Nan. I wish she was a little more dynamic? I kept expecting her to step up or realize what was happening and instead she mostly spent time as a damsel trying to please someone who didn’t deserve an ounce of her time. One of the antagonists just held too much sway that didn’t completely make sense for me.

I loved the setting and friendships. The Stanhope’s were incredible. I kept expecting something poor to happen there and I loved that it never did. It was a wonderful balance to the darker sides of this story. There is a heavy faith element throughout (for those who like to know!).

UNPOPULAR OPINION.

This did not work for me like the first book did.

Why?

I felt it was too repetitive to the first story. Same bad guy doing the exact same thing. Same reason for going to the past. Same things happening in the past. I don’t know, just a bit too many similarities for this not to drag.

The romance between Ellen and Harrison was really sweet. I did love the first quarter and last where they got a lot more page time together. There were some seriously swoony and charged moments between the two and who am I kidding, that’s ALL I WANT.

I mostly sped read through the later half of this hoping to get back to the main characters actually sharing the page. I wanted a lot more from the surrounding plot and it even took until 30% in to actually know what the whole story would entail. I don’t know, just wasn’t as captivated by this one y’all.
