BOOK SUMMARY:

When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city.

Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die.

Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne’er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society.

But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

In this lush, romantic new epic fantasy series from New York Times bestselling author Hannah Whitten, a young woman’s secret power to raise the dead plunges her into the dangerous and glamorous world of the Sainted King’s royal court.

VERY INTO THIS.

Uh, y’all. I was not expecting to love this as much as I did and I’m so excited it blew my expectations out of the water. What a twisty romantic tale that left me needing the second book nowwww.

I loved Lore. I thought the whole general plot of the book was interesting too. A mash of things I’ve read before but filled with a lot of nuance that kept me listening and intrigued by what was going to happen next.

The romance has me doing some major side eye. I don’t know who I want and I don’t know who’s I need to run from. Gosh I love morally gray men with magic. It’s very much a slow burn romance with just the right level of love triangle for me.

Betrayals and turns kept coming and every time I thought I was going one way I was yanked another way. I love fantasies like this. I loved the atmosphere and vibe and all the things in between. I’m going to go pick up book two ASAP.

BOOK SUMMARY:

In a city split into two opposing sides, power comes in many bloodlines, money, love, and-most importantly-secrets.
An heiress in the most notorious family in Lynchaven, Camilla Marchese is doing all she can to keep her family’s syndicate, the Iron Saint Railway, from slipping into bankruptcy. When the gorgeous and depraved Nicolai Attano, the leader of a rival family, offers to pay off the Inspector in exchange for her hand, she has no choice but to give up not only her throne-but her name.
Nico has his own motivations for their union beyond maintaining peace with her family. A serial kidnapper known as The Collector has been ravaging the streets of Remnant Row, stirring up mistrust between natives and descendants. If Milla can help restore safety to his streets, he’ll have no need for her or her family’s company. Find the Collector, prevent a war between their sides of the city, and pay off the family debt before she turns twenty-one. If Milla can fulfill her end of the bargain, she’ll walk away with more freedom than she’s ever had before.
But this deal plunges Milla into the city’s dark underbelly where remnant magic and arcane science compete in a deadly game of depravity. When forbidden feelings rise for her new husband and dark family secrets come to light, Milla must discover the truth about her past before it gets them both killed or worse-collected.
Set in a post-industrial age setting on a magical Isle, Peaky Blinders meets the magic system of the Grishaverse in this rivals-to-lovers adult fantasy romance.

THIS WAS INCREDIBLE.

Why did I hesitate to pick this up? The world may never know and I regret not reading this sooner. One of my favorite aspects was the readability. This was written with such ease and flow I could not put it down. I was drawn in from the first few chapters and smitten with the whole plot.

The BANTER and snark and dynamic between Nico and Camilla was everything. I was obsessed with these two and how they interacted. Perfectly heated and torturous where you can clearly see the connection forming between them. I loved Nico. Protective without being a jerk and was absolutely swoony too. One of my favorite micro tropes is when the guy picks out a dress for the girl and this NAILED IT. Camilla was stunning too. She showed a lot of growth throughout as she tackled new information about herself and understanding her spot in the hierarchy of her family.

I loved the setting and vibes this book gave off. It’s dark and gritty, filled with a steam-punk, gilded age aura but add magic. And it WORKS. I am so enthralled by this book. I absolutely can’t wait for book two.

MASTERMIND.

Ohhh y’all know I loved this. It was incredible and brought so much more than I could have imagined. I LOVED how much world building happened and how this really built this book, but also built the future books too.

The romances actually took a little bit of a backseat. I wasn’t mad at all because I think the heavy plot focused helped with this one a lot. I did love the romances we got and seeing couples actually work through difficult issues and feelings. Learning to communicate better and help each other along is my favorite. I love Hunt/Bryce and Ruhn/Lidia the mostest.

I didn’t mind the switching of POV’s. It kept things moving and kept me turning pages. I actually like this style of chapter break-ups and love how everything came together. I cried, I shouted, I cheered and felt every emotion under the sun. I loved where things ended and I look forward to more!

BOOK SUMMARY:

The year was 1926. Glamour, riches and greed filled the air, but under the facade of glitter and gold lay truths much darker, more sinister, and entirely less human . . .

Adeline Colton was cursed. Everyone in Georgia knew the devil walked her farm, and maybe they were right, because each month she had . . . dreams. Visions of a dark prince and a shadowed forest. A creature so wrong, temptation lurked beneath her skin.

So after escaping to New York City, it’s no surprise when her bad fortune follows. Only this time, it’s in the form of Jack Warren: millionaire bootlegger, infamous gangster, and criminal who makes Addie his fervent obsession.

Jack is everything Addie should avoid, but the more she resists his pull, the deeper she’s drawn into his extravagant world. Lured by a life of freedom and desire, Adeline must make a choice: heed her family’s warnings or follow Jack into the dark. But when fate binds them together, Jack is revealed to be something else—not man, not beast, not even the devil, but a creature much, much worse.

DID I MISS SOMETHING?

I’m sitting here looking at all of these wonderful reviews for this book wondering if I have somehow picked up the wrong because this ain’t it. And I gave it 300 pages before I really hit a wall and skimmed my way to the end. It was trying to be a lot of books I’ve already read + the addition of 200 pages that weren’t necessary.

There was a lot of time spent doing nothing. Addie would be a stick in the mud about every little thing & Jack would sometimes try to help the situation. Too much time spent on the nuances of trying to get Addie to figure out her magic and plenty of running around trying to find all of the artifacts needed to turn Addie immortal.

The mate trope here also rubbed be the wrong way. It started off AWKARD. And then took a long time before I finally started coming around to them. I did like Jack and the his merry group of banished fae. They were all dandy. I think there was plenty here that would work for many people, I am just not that person.
