BOOK SUMMARY:

She hates him. He needs her. Can they survive when all they have is each other?

Zander Rune was the darling of Hollywood until he fell from glory and was labelled a problematic bad boy. His public image needs fixing—fast—or he’ll lose the role of a lifetime, and all his dreams with it.

Charlie Hart is a regular teenage girl who despises everything Zander represents. But thanks to her scheming best friend and an ill-timed social media competition, Charlie finds herself pretending to be Zander’s biggest fan on a four-day reality TV adventure led by renowned survivalist Rykon Hawke.

When their trip goes horribly wrong, Charlie and Zander are left stranded in the wilderness. No Rykon, no film crew, no rescue. The only way they’ll survive is if they trust each other. But in order to do so, both will have to let go of the ghosts of their pasts, and just maybe find themselves—and one another—in the process.

SURPRISINGLY A HIT.

I’ve seen some mixed reviews from friends on this one, but I’m happy to report that waiting for the audiobook was the way to go and I am happy to report I thought that this was a gem. It has some heavier themes that I thought were handled well and I felt all the emotions during those closing scenes after the full truth was explained and friendships were reunited.

I don’t quite know how I feel about the reveal for the wilderness trip. It seemed a bit shady (which I guess reality shows kind of are??), but rubbed me wrong on a few levels.

Otherwise though, I don’t have any major complaints. It was dual POV (with two narrators!!) so I felt really engaged in the story. The romance isn’t at the forefront, but it is there and had a genuinely sweet quality to it. There were a lot of little nuanced moments that struck home for me and I had a good time with this one.

  • Romance: kisses
  • Violence: mild
  • Content warnings: wilderness excursions that result in life threatening situations, mentions of suicide, driving under the influence of drugs

I LIKED IT!

I enjoyed reading this one! I have been looking forward to this story and the audiobook was fantastic. And I loved the FMC. She cries a lot (relatable) and goes through a great coming of age process that I look forward to seeing even more of in the next book. I loved seeing the growth and strengths and weaknesses.

Found family was a bit aspect of this book and I loved seeing those bonds form. A ragtag group of rascals from different spots in life and with a whole host of personalities. I loved getting to know everyone.

The romance is not at the forefront but I am intrigued by it. I loved the trope movement (of which I won’t go into detail to save from spoilers). I definitely need more of these two (and hooray for calling this book YA and actually having it be kisses only).

  • YA Fantasy Retelling
  • Language: low
  • Romance: kisses

Book Review: Face the Night by Lani Forbes

Release Date: August 15th, 2023

BOOK SUMMARY:

On a harsh frontier where good and evil contend for people’s minds, a young woman must fight for her true identity in this scintillating YA fantasy from the author of the award-winning Age of the Seventh Sun trilogy.

Once, Catriona Macgregor led a charmed life. Daughter of a wealthy rancher, pretty and educated, she looked forward to all the world had to offer–until fate took a turn. Now family, home, and even her name have been stripped away. As “Black Cat Whitfield,” adopted daughter of an outlaw, she’s wanted by the authorities. It certainly wasn’t the destiny she imagined–especially as one of the Blessed.

The Blessed, rare people like Cat, are supposed to use their gifts to carry out missions for the Patron Saints, but she can only imagine that Saint Prudentia made a terrible mistake in choosing her. Still, her gift has never deserted her. Whenever danger threatens, Cat receives a vision–just in time to save her life. And when she meets a renegade priest, Father Ignatius, he helps her understand how her ability may be part of a much bigger picture. A picture that involves facing up to the monstrous Baron Caldwell – the one who ordered her parents killed – and his son, Adrian, who betrayed them all.

Cat is torn between guilt over her parents’ death, a longing for vengeance against their killers, and a dismaying new interest in Adrian. It would be easiest to flee the whole situation and never look back. But as someone once told her, you can’t outrun the darkness on your heels. There’s only one way to break through to sunrise – by turning to face the night.

TOOK ME BY SURPRISE.

I feel like I could sit and nitpick small aspects of this that didn’t work for me, but by the end of the book I just FELT good about what I read and how truly enjoyable it was. It’s also well situated within the YA category without any major content issues (other than some light swearing).

The themes surrounding facing the night and the problems of the past was woven beautifully throughout. I loved seeing Cat going from a woman in hiding to taking what happened to her in the past and using that to be a source of strength towards the future. I also loved Adrian and his steadfastness in choosing the right path and looking after his sister.

There’s even a sweet, slow burn second chance romance that I thought was great. Little moments and reminders of who they were in the past and how that played out for them reconnecting and standing together.

I loved the western vibes thrown in with the middling gods fantasy aspects. It felt unique and something I haven’t recently read. It wraps up super well for a standalone and I highly recommend the audiobook!

Overall audience notes:

  • YA Fantasy
  • Language: some light
  • Romance: kisses
  • Violence: high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a parent, loss of a loved one, gun violence, murder

SATISFYING CONCLUSION.

I finally took the time to finish this series and I loved it! What a great YA fantasy trilogy y’all. If you only get this far in my review, I definitely recommend for your TBR.

This is heavy in the romance (YAY) so I appreciate that my two favs don’t have to spend a lot of time separated. Even if things aren’t running smoothly while they’re together I can’t stand when a couple is separated for too long. It makes a book drag.

The plot is solid. This series has one of my favorite villains. I kind of hate that I love him? He’s completely warped and consumed, yet the small tidbits of humanity make him layered. He keeps things interesting.

I wanted a bit more from the ending. I thought things were going to be a little different, and it all worked out by the VERY end, but the waiting was a little frustrating.

All in all. READ it. Viking inspired, plenty of action, a forbidden romance and more.

  • Romance: closed door
  • Violence: high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: torture, highly descriptive blood and gore, loss of loved ones
