BOOK SUMMARY:

Percy Jackson for adults meets The Hunger Games with a slow burn romance between a contestant and Hades himself.

Every hundred years, the gods toy with us mere mortals.
And we let them.

The gods of myth are alive and well.
Once every century, they select a new ruler in a cutthroat competition, pushing mortal players to the limit. But this year, Hades is done sitting on the sidelines. And he’s picking a champion no one expects—in this modern mythic romantasy, she’ll fight for her life…
for the god of Death.

VIBE CHECK.

You know when you’re just here for the vibes? That’s this book. I loved it. I loved the mythology aspects and the competition was nice and brutal. For an 18 hour audiobook I had no time flying through this one. It is engaging and full of good twists and you know what, I’m here for the romance too.

I liked the pacing and all of the side characters. I think some aspects of the action scenes could have had a bigger punch, but I thought all of the different games were interesting and led to good character development for Lyra. She still has a ways to go, but y’all know I love a good arc over the course of an entire series. And I’m wildly obsessed with Hades.

I’ll absolutely pick up the next one. I need to know what happens next.

Overall audience notes:

  • Fantasy Romance
  • Language: high
  • Romance: 2 open door; innuendo
  • Violence: high
  • Content Warnings: loss of life, murder, blood and gore

BOOK SUMMARY:

My twin sister is the true queen of Aryd. She survives, hiding and clinging to life in the desert, while I reign as the false queen alongside the monstrous King Eidolon. There’s only one escape from this gilded prison: Reven. My Shadowraith. My heart. Only the shadows that he struggles to control are growing more sinister, more powerful.

It’s just a matter of time before they turn on him…and on me.

Even escape doesn’t mean true freedom, though, when we’re still on the run from Eidolon’s unstoppable armies. And when we discover there’s a traitor among us, I have no choice…I must become the queen I was never meant to be.

Because as one evil hunts me, the other loves me more than himself.

And my fate lies with both.

SECOND BOOK.

Well, I thought the first little bit and the ending were interesting and relevant. Don’t ask me what happened in the middle because honestly I’m a still a little confused and not sure what most of it has to do with the series as a whole. Things were really dragged out.

I also wish I was still felt attached to the romance. Things went from a separation to tiny dashes of love triangle vibes to commitments I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know. I liked them initially and now I’m not so sure.

That’s how this book made me feel, not so sure. I want to read the third because I’m curious how things will wrap up. I am somewhat invested in a few of the story lines and luckily it’s a great audiobook.

Overall audience notes:

  • NA Fantasy Romance
  • Language: mild
  • Romance: very vague (no description) open scene
  • Violence: moderate – high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, battle themes, near death experiences, blood/gore depiction, possession

BOOK SUMMARY:

One born to rule. One to forfeit…

Everything about my life is a lie. As a hidden twin princess, born second, I have only one purpose—to sacrifice my life for my sister if death comes for her. I’ve been living under the guise of a poor, obscure girl of no standing, slipping into the palace and into the role of the true princess when danger is present.

Now the queen is dead and the ageless King Eidolon has sent my sister a gift—an eerily familiar gift—and a proposal to wed. I don’t trust him, so I do what I was born to do and secretly take her place on the eve of the coronation. Which is why, when a figure made of shadow kidnaps the new queen, he gets me by mistake.

As I try to escape, all the lies start to unravel. And not just my lies. The Shadowraith who took me has secrets of his own. He struggles to contain the shadows he wields—other faces, identities that threaten my very life.

Winter is at the walls. Darkness is looming. And the only way to save my sister and our dominion is to kill Eidolon…and the Shadowraith who has stolen my heart.

Thank you to RB Media and Netgalley for the Audio ARC.

WOW THIS WAS GOOD.

Book hype for this one is real. I super enjoyed this.

Audio notes: I don’t have any! I LOVED the audio. Great narrators. Easy to listen. I flew through it. Highly recommend that avenue if you’re into audiobooks!

Another read where I felt remined why fantasy genre is the best genre. I loved the world building and shadow concept. The twists behind that was so cool and I felt added another unique layer to this story overall. Filled with a morally gray love interest that you can’t get enough of, I was hooked. I liked the steady pacing and that there’s a slow build to everything else happening.

Meren was a strong FMC and I liked her tenacity and loyalty to her sister. I love a great sister bond and I know that’s what is happening here and I hope we get to see more of it in the next book. Reven is the complex soul I love and I’m happy that I feel like I know him as well as Meren. Sometimes the love interest gets tossed aside and seems one dimensional and I liked the complexity his characterization received.

The ending was WILD. Still a bit in shock and everything expertly led to this conclusion. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Overall audience notes:

  • NA Fantasy Romance
  • Language: some strong
  • Romance: one open door + some innuendo
  • Violence: moderate
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: battle scenes, loss of life, kidnapping
