BOOK SUMMARY:

Newly crowned as king, Keris has watched powerless as his forbidden relationship with Zarrah is revealed. But when Zarrah is imprisoned by the Empress, Keris knows there is only one way to save her: to ally with the kingdom he nearly destroyed.

Imprisoned on the dreaded Devil’s Island, Zarrah faces two choices: prove her loyalty to the Empress who condemned her or die a traitor. Yet as she struggles to survive among violent prisoners, Zarrah uncovers a third path: a rebellion to overthrow tyranny entwined with a destiny she must fight to claim.

While the Empress plots a war with devastating consequences, Keris and Zarrah must find their way back to each other. Yet their greatest adversary is the fiery passion between them. Unless they overcome the bitterness of betrayal, their love will not be the bringer of peace but rather the fuel that turns the Endless War into an inferno.

KERIS.

I binge read this on release day because I have no chill (and also I loathe spoilers so it becomes a necessity). ANYWAYS. I loved this. It was a great wrap up to Keris and Zarrah’s storyline.

I ADORE Keris. I loved his character progression throughout. He had a lot of hard choices and had to find a way to help his kingdom. I loved his passion (maybe a bit of an obsession) with making sure Zarrah was safe. It provided an arc that I was here for. He’s full of swoon and romantic moments.

Zarrah showed some solid character changes too. I liked getting her POV and seeing the subtle moments as she continued to struggle with the the truths of her life were unraveling.

I didn’t love some of the romantic scenes. One just flat wasn’t for me and I wish there would have been more general alone/quiet time. I LOVED all of the action, don’t get me wrong, but it made me ache a bit to see Keris and Zarrah together more.

There’s some perfectly placed Lara and Aren moments (of which I will hear NO SLANDER about). I thought it concluded well and the small hints about Ahnna have me excited to see even more of this world.

Overall audience notes:

  • Fantasy Romance
  • Language: strong
  • Romance: 3-4 open door; moderate – high explicit
  • Violence: high & graphic
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, battle themes, blood/gore depiction, cannibalism, near death experiences

BOOK SUMMARY:

A CAGE.

Owned by a ruthless Assassin Lord, Scarlett Monrhoe and her two sisters have been trained since they were children to torture and take life. They are the most feared trio on the continent, but they are also wild and unpredictable. A tragic night has Scarlett finding herself locked away in a noble’s household, trapped and forgotten, until she’s ready to fall into line.

A CHOICE.
Until the day she is presented with a job. If she completes the assignment, her payment will be something she has coveted for ten years. Revenge against the Fae Fire Prince who brutally killed her mother ten years ago. Is she willing to sacrifice her ideals for retribution?

A MYSTERY.
But when children begin disappearing from her home, all her plans are put on hold as she races to save the most innocent. With the help of old friends, a jilted lover, and a mysterious newcomer who claims the magic of the Fae is possible in the mortal lands, Scarlett delves into the darkest corners of the world. Forgotten secrets will come to light, and she will discover the darkness extends far beyond her own kingdom.

Lady of Darkness is a new adult, fantasy, enemies-to-lovers romance and adventure novel that will appeal to lovers of possessive Fae, wicked Witches, sexy Shifters, and arrogant Vampires. It may have triggers of love-hate themes, sexual scenes (both consensual and non), violence, and jealous/possessive themes.

I AM HOOKED.

When I started this I immediately noticed the Throne of Glass vibes it was giving off. Luckily though, over the course of the book I do think it felt different enough that I became very much attached to the storyline. So if you loved ToG, my star rating is clearly saying TRY THIS ONE.

I loved having dual POV with Sorrin and Scarlett. There’s incredible tension between them. From strangers to sort of friends to lovers to enemies. I loved all of the ups and downs. This isn’t (currently) a straight forward romance and I actually am really into that. It’s a nice mix-up from my usual fantasy romance reads. This feels spread out, playing the long game, and I’ve got 4 more books to see how it all unfolds.

The plot is enjoyable. I loved the found family vibes and the close relationship between characters. I felt all the things and some of those reveals at the end are some of my favorite to read. FAVORITE. There’s plenty of action and intrigue, some burgeoning court politics and all sorts of fae, shifters, vampires, witches and more. This was an amazing first book and I want more.

It was a great audiobook too!!

Overall audience notes:

  • Fantasy Romance
  • Language: moderate
  • Romance: brief open
  • Violence: high
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: rape, PTSD, loss of close friends and loved ones, kidnapping, physical and magical altercations, murder, blood/gore depiction, torture

BOOK SUMMARY:

After a decade of silence, Dee and Ben reunite for a road trip they once promised to take. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Dee Matthews is the cohost of the smash-hit podcast Did I Forget To Tell You?, where she interviews family, friends, and past lovers. Nothing is off limits, except for one man (known on the show only as Name Redacted) who happens to be her high school best friend Ben. During their senior year spring break, Dee and Ben took a road trip to visit Ben’s grandma. They buried a time capsule in her backyard, pledging to return in ten years to open it. Then their friendship fell apart in spectacular fashion. They haven’t spoken to each other since.

Ben Porter’s life since that moment has been unexciting but comfortable, until his grandma reveals a family secret that flips his whole world upside down. Her dying wish is for him to stop doing what is safest and go after what he really wants. He starts by showing up on Dee’s doorstep with every intention of fulfilling their long-ago promise. Despite her reservations, Dee can’t say no. This trip could be her chance to give her listeners the Name Redacted interview they’ve been begging for–and finally put her unresolved feelings for Ben to rest.

As the miles fly by, Dee and Ben’s friendship reignites. But the closer they get to reaching their destination, the more apparent it becomes that their attraction to each other cannot be ignored. Their last adventure ended in disaster, and they’re about to find out if any hope of a future together is in the rear view mirror.

MEH.

I’m writing this review only a few days after finishing this book and can hardly remember it. And that’s pretty much the crux of anything else I say after this point. It was fine, but not all the endearing.

I never liked the FMC, Dee. Something about her continually rubbed me the wrong way and I hated how she handled a lot of her interactions with Ben. Ben should have dropped his promise and moved right along. Admittedly, I did think there were some sweet moments. Those were very much overshadowed by everything else.

The podcast chapters were annoying. I didn’t think they added anything to the story (except for maybe the last one). It took me out and I just wanted to get back to the road trip. I did like the dual POV line-up because I love both sides of a tale.

And I think I’ve basically ran out of things to say, it was okay y’all. Moving along.

Overall audience notes:

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Language: some strong
  • Romance: fade to black
  • Trigger/Content Warnings: infidelity mentioned, grief/loss depiction, death of a grandmother
