WHAT A BLAST.

I did a little readathon with this book and had such a great time flying through it. I feel like dragons have kind of dropped off the map but I am here for the revival via Dragon Cursed. The ending reveals and cliffhanger were exactly what I was hoping for and I’m sat to see what the next book holds.

This was a well paced, high action read where I wasn’t quite sure who was going to make it out of each trial. I liked not knowing who was good or bad or just very gray. It made the journey more engaging and easy to devour. I loved the magic system and concept of the world. I felt like I got enough to understand what was happening but there were also many elements that I know will be expanded upon in the future.

Y’all know I love a slow burn and that definitely here. I think the vibe feels more new adult than young adult if that phases you. I’ve read all of Elise Kova’s books (20+) and she continues to be one of my favorite fantasy romance authors. Definitely check this book out!!

A LET DOWN.

I enjoyed book one so dang much, and then this one…I don’t think I’m going to finish this series now. I’m just not feeling it anymore.

Mostly because the plot went POOF. I’m still trying to find it honestly. And I get that it’s a romantasy, I love this genre, but I also need an actual plot to be happening to make the romance feel heightened and important. And it’s not that spice overwhelmed the story (though it did a little in the late second half), it’s just that the story meandered. I think they were supposed to be collecting stones? And it became so half effort attempt with a lot of arguing between Darius and Nara.

There were some good romantic reveals. Usually I’m obsessed with this kind of moments and that did help my enjoyment level. The banter was good and the swoon factor is there. I just got bored with everything else.

Amma just can’t help herself around Damien Maleficus Bloodthorne, danger be damned, but, truly, what danger is there? Damien’s heart, the one he swears to not have, has been softening right before her eyes. Nevermind the weird smoke that sometimes unwittingly emanates from his hands or that faraway look he gets to his eyes, and a voice she can’t hear telling him that he’s meant to be a vessel? Surely it’s all just a bad dream.

After finally tasting freedom and learning that Amma may have ancient, innate magical powers of her own, why not use them to do exactly as she pleases?

FUN SERIES.

If you’ve been missing the vibes of Assistant to the Villain may I suggest trying this series out? Book two was wonderful and I can’t wait to read the next. I love how quirky these are while also still providing world building and magic.

I find them to be an easy listen and this genuinely has one of the slowest of slow burns and I HAVE MISSED THESE KINDS OF SLOW BURN ROMANCES. Give me books of yearning y’all. I BEG OF YOU.

I can’t really say much more without spoilers but I’m definitely going to be downloading book three soon to see what happens next.
